Grade 4 Market Day 2011

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Recently the Oakhurst Grade 4s held their Market Day. They were in groups of two to four girls. They had a month to make their products and got four hours in class to make some extra products. They had to fill in a business plan and a checklist. On the morning of the Market Day excitement was buzzing in the Grade 4 classroom. Each group set up a table and decorated their stall. At half past eight the grade 1s and 2s started looking around. The older classes came a bit later.

Although tired and cold after the long morning, the grade 4s had a wonderful time. They were so excited to count their money! They counted their money, gave 10% to a charity which helps people to get jobs, and divided their remaining money equally between their groups. What fun the Grade 4s had!

Spring Hats on Spring Day

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

To celebrate the first day of Spring on 1 September, all the Oakhurst girls wore fancy, colourful hats to school. All the girls gladly showed off their beautiful hats to the rest of the school in the hall. It was all loads of fun for everyone; even the teachers wore their lovely Spring hats. The few girls who didn’t wear hats, they still had spring smiles on their faces. We had lots of fun that day!

Bok Day at Oakhurst

Monday, September 5th, 2011

As we all walked into assembly on Friday the 2nd of September there was excitement all around! All of us put a lot of effort into our outfits for Springbok Supporters’ Day and we all looked fabulous in our green and gold. Oakhurst celebrated this day to show how much we support the Springboks, and we all want to wish them the best of luck for the World Cup. We all hope that they play like stars and bring home the gold!

Link with St Andrews Church of England

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

Afri Twin approached Oakhurst in 2009 to link with St Andrews Church of England School in Manchester. The initial link was started with Mrs Marks and Ms Chan. The children in each class wrote letters to each other. Each class had an opportunity to get to know about the different lives, cultures and schools of their pen pals; thereby forging new friendships. This continued for a year.

Miss Chan then visited Oakhurst in October 2010 where she and Mrs Marks set up interactive learning activities where pupils from each school could become global citizens. In the July holidays, Mrs Marks had an opportunity to go to Manchester and spend a week at St Andrews.

It was an amazing experience as she got to see how the school was run, meet the whole staff, parents and children. Mrs Marks did a presentation about South Africa and Oakhurst, pointing out the similarities and differences between the two schools. She ran a competition where the younger children had to colour in the South African flag and the older children had to answer 5 questions about South Africa. The children were curious and interested, asking many questions and wanted to find out more about South Africa. This developed both groups of children as global citizens.

She also had an opportunity to travel around the city of Manchester and its surrounding areas and even visited the famous football grounds of Manchester United. We look forward to continuing our very successful programme when the new school year in England begins.

Grade 5 Outing on 24 August

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

We went on an outing to Silvermine Wetlands at Clovelly on the 24th August 2011. We had a guide named Terri Corr. We learnt about invisible and visible pollution. We also learnt about bugs such as the Dragonfly Nymph, the fresh water snail and the blood worm.

We moved to a few parts of the river and then we went down to the beach. We played in the waves and then had a sandcastle competition. We had to build a river or seawater creature. We went back into the water and nearly everybody got wet! We had such a great time and learnt so much about water pollution.
