Everyone was included in the races, for example the three legged race and tunnel ball. Even though there was no trophy to be won, everyone participated and worked as a team to bring spirit to the event. We encouraged the girls to win their races for the various houses and sang house songs. Everyone had fun and it turned out to be a great memory to take with us, as we progress through our school career.

Everyone was given a stick and a tube. The tubes were different sizes so they produced different sounds. One of the women from the workshop stood on the stage and we had to copy what she did with the tube and stick. If she hit it twice we would have to copy her. On the table behind her were all the different tubes. When she picked a tube that a row of girls had we would have to play on our tubes, if she put down our tubes we would stop. We made lots of beautiful sounds. Her brother and her niece were playing on different instruments in the background. It was an amazing experience, everyone enjoyed it!

The evening started off with our stupendous principal, Mrs Van Velden, giving us an inspiring speech. Next our remarkable teacher, Ms Deane, gave a speech. This speech was different from others because to each girl Ms Deane pointed out all their best virtues and qualities and how everyone had grown and changed. Later we had a scavenger hunt and had great fun finding all the clues. It was our last function together as a class at Oakhurst and we enjoyed and treasured every moment of it. We will always be thankful for everything that all the teachers have done for us. Thank you for being there for us.

Recently the Oakhurst girls celebrated the Christmas spirit by enjoying a family carols evening. Each grade performed a festive song accompanied by a few teachers playing the trumpet, saxophone and the piano. The carols evening was not only a night of enjoyment for everyone, but also a night of giving. We handed over presents that the girls had collected for underprivileged children through the Tree of Joy Foundation.

Shan Taylor, an ex Oakhurst pupil, visited our school recently. She came to tell the girls about her trip called 4 Bikes 4 Singapore. Shan has always dreamt of riding a motorbike and that dream has been turned into an adventure. Shan, her brother, father and a friend are about to travel from Cape Town to Singapore on their motorbikes while raising funds for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Infection Ward. There will be an extra passenger, a doll called Lolo, the Red Cross mascot, riding along with them. The Oakhurst girls and their Afritwin school in Manchester will follow their adventures via their website at www.4bikes4singapore.wordpress.com There has been a lot of preparation towards this four month trip and we hope it pays off and they succeed. We wish them the best of luck and safe travels.

They were in groups of two to four girls. They had a month to make their products and got four hours in class to make some extra products. They had to fill in a business plan and a checklist. On the morning of the Market Day excitement was buzzing in the Grade 4 classroom. Each group set up a table and decorated their stall. At half past eight the grade 1s and 2s started looking around. The older classes came a bit later.

Although tired and cold after the long morning, the grade 4s had a wonderful time. They were so excited to count their money! They counted their money, gave 10% to a charity which helps people to get jobs, and divided their remaining money equally between their groups. What fun the Grade 4s had!
