Grade 1

Welcome to Grade 1

This is where it all begins! Our girls have started practising their alphabet, as well as learning to read and write. We do matwork with the 4 reading groups on a regular basis, to consolidate and maintain consistency in the ‘learning-to-read’ process. We have introduced them to Kathy & Mark, gradually moving on to Janet & John.

Girls have also been introduced to the addition and subtraction concepts, learning about interesting characters such as Peter Plus & Mr Minus. They have also been practising their handwriting patterns to improve letter formations.

The class has been divided into 2 groups for Art, as well as computers.

On Tuesdays we have Swimming in summer, and Phys Ed in winter with Mrs Davis.The Grade 1 teacher is Mrs Taliep and she enjoys reading. She loves cooking and the great outdoors. Her favourite places to visit are Arniston and Hermanus.

I am Cynthia West (Miss West). This is my first year as a teacher aide. I assist with the Grade 1’s and Grade 4’s. I am enthusiastic about being able to help and support the teachers and girls at Oakhurst.

I am also studying at Unisa for my Bachelor’s Degree in Education for Foundation Phase. I love new and exciting things, especially outdoor activities such as hiking.
