Grade 4
Grade 4 is the exciting start to a new phase in children’s education. The Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to 6) brings opportunity for new skills to be acquired and consolidated. At Oakhurst we continue with our focus on the languages (English, Afrikaans, Xhosa) and Mathematics. At this point the children are always excited to start new subjects. These include Natural Sciences, History, Geography, Life Orientation and Economic and Management Sciences. Lots of energy is used up in Physical Education and Swimming classes. Great favourites in the teaching programme are weekly Art, Technology and Computer classes.
The Grade 4 Teacher is Mrs Marks. She loves being creative and enjoys painting, drawing and doing mosaics in her spare time. She also enjoys reading, traveling and being outdoors.
The Grade 4 curriculum includes lots of opportunity for interesting exploration. We try to include projects, models and lots of other activities in our learning programme. Some of the highlights in Grade 4 include a treasure hunt while learning about maps and how to use the compass. We make weather instruments and collect weather data while doing the weather section. Co-operative learning forms a big part of the World Religions and Space modules. The pupils focus on Local History by taking a walk into Rondebosch and the class stops to have an ice-cream at the Wimpy. The Grade 4s get the opportunity to grow their own plants as part of the Farming section. Ecology (animals and plants living together) is an important part of the curriculum and the learners make a diorama to demonstrate their understanding of animals’ habitats.
Outings include a visit to the Castle and a boat trip to explore the Waterfront. We go to the Slave Lodge to learn about World Religions. The highlight of the year includes the 4 Camp. These wonderful 2 days usually take place at the end of the year. It is a lovely way for the learners to consolidate their Grade 4 year and to get ready to move into Grade 5.
