Art at Oakhurst

Confidence, a passion for art and a steady acquisition of artistic skills are of prime importance in Art classes at Oakhurst.

Classes of fifteen to eighteen girls are given from Grade One through to Grade Seven. The required Art curriculum is covered, as well as additional extension work. Grade Seven learners visit various art galleries in Cape Town, and last year enjoyed the South African artists exhibition at Iziko. Learners are encouraged to experiment with different media, tools and techniques. Every child’s art is exhibited on the boards throughout the school and their art work is regularly entered into various art competitions and displays. Over the seven years at school, the girls are encouraged to build up skills, confidence to attempt new ideas, a knowledge of art theory and above all, an ability to appreciate and enjoy all art forms.

Drama

All grades participate in drama classes, where a variety of disciplines are learnt. Focus is directed on confidence building, learning drama skills and above all, fun. Oakhurst has produced three major productions over the last nine years. Every child in the school participated in these, as well as some of the teachers!

Computers

During March 2006, of our Centenary year, the computer lab was upgraded to include e-mail and internet access. Computer classes from Gr. 1 – 7 form part of the school’s curriculum. Girls spend an hour a week in the computer lab and cover a variety of skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and enjoy using the educational software.

The Computer Lab is open every afternoon from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Any girls who wish to use a computer may do so during this time.

Scripture Union

Scripture Union is similar to a ‘club’ where people of similar spiritual interests can fellowship together and explore their faiths in a non-threatening way. Its focus is on Jesus and the Christian Religion, but other faiths can attend and are encouraged to seek their own faith and strengthen their own relationship with God Almighty.

Scripture Union is for Grade 4 -7 and meets on a Thursday at Big Break in the hall. The meeting starts with a sing-a-long with the guitar, we then open in prayer and a simple message from the Bible is given and discussed. Often the programme consists of games and object lessons.

Every Friday morning at 07:45 – 08:05, there is a prayer meeting for all girls at Oakhurst in the upstairs tech room. This prayer meeting is led by the SU Committee, made up of Grade 7 learners, and it encourages children to pray and trust God with their needs. There is a welcoming SU party in the first term to welcome the new Grade 4’s and others new learners to Oakhurst’s SU. At the end of the year, we have another party, this time a farewell party to the Grade 7’s and an opportunity for the Grade 8’s from the high schools to come and share what is happening at their high school SU.

SU at Oakhurst is part of Scripture Union South Africa. We use their curriculum and support their holiday camps and holiday clubs. SU at Oakhurst is also supported by the ‘Moms that Care” prayer group. These Oakhurst moms meet every Thursday morning to pray for the needs of the school.

‘It is good to fellowship and pray together.’

Library

The library is a very happy part of Oakhurst. It is the scene of much activity during both breaks and after school when girls come to change their books, do their project work or simply visit.

Foundation Phase classes each come for a weekly ‘reading aloud’ session which they love. The older girls have specific periods in which they can do research. Grade 4 has a special media class where they are taught library skills. All the girls are made to feel that the library is a magical place by Mrs le Cordeur, our librarian; she even has a welcoming fairy living in a floating flower bowl.

Social Committee

The Social Committee is ‘The Face Of Oakhurst’. When meetings or functions are held, these girls from Grade 5, 6 and 7 greet and direct visitors with friendly smiles and Oakhurst manners to the correct venue.

They also make thank you speeches when we have visits from theatre groups, assist with teas and the handing out of programmes whenever we have a concert.
