Foundation Phase

Grade R

Learning through play

Grade R provides a warm, nurturing environment through which we ensure that your daughters transition effectively and happily from the informal setting of pre-school to the more formal setting of Grade 1.Our priority is to celebrate the uniqueness of each girl in an inclusive, respectful, loving and kind environment.

Your daughters are taught to become logical and creative thinkers who are able to make independent and responsible decisions. Grade R is a stimulating place for your daughters to both grow and learn in. Sound foundations are laid on which to further develop their skills.

Guided free-playtime along with more structured activities make up most of our day. Language, Mathematics and Life Skills incorporating stories, music and movement, provide optimum opportunities for the learning of new concepts through age-appropriate activities. In addition to the school lessons and activities, which include; ball skills, music and swimming, we offer a variety of private extra- mural activities.

Grade 1

Read and Write!

Our Learners start practising their alphabet, as well as learning to read and write.

We do grouped reading, phonics and maths on a regular basis, to consolidate and maintain consistency in the learning process. They are introduced to Jolly Phonics and the characters of the Oxford Reading Tree Series.

Learners are introduced to the addition and subtraction concepts, learning about interesting characters such as Peter Plus & Mr Minus.

They practise their handwriting patterns to improve letter formations.

The Grade 1s attend Computer and Art lessons once a week. Their visits to our school library are filled with magical stories and taking out new books.

Grade 2

Each child is unique, respectful and kind!

With love, care and lots of laughs, we discover new things and lead with our hearts!

The world of books and numbers opens up as we further develop our skills in English, Afrikaans and Mathematics.  isiXhosa is taught as a second additional language through songs and conversation.  In Life Skills we use different tools to learn, be it a paintbrush in art, a keyboard in computers or a recorder in music.  Our passion for physical education and sportsmanship comes into play when participating in tennis, hockey, netball and swimming.

Our confidence and independence blossom throughout the year as we explore our individuality!

There is so much to learn in Grade 2 and we give it our all no matter how small!

Grade 3

Time to grow!

The Grade 3 classroom is a fun-filled learning environment.

The children get to explore and learn through a variety of themes. While English, Afrikaans, Maths and Life Skills are our four main subjects, at Oakhurst we also attend Music, Art, Computer, Xhosa, PE, Swimming and Library lessons.

We learn more about working in groups this year.

At Computer lessons we learn about Google Classroom, create books on the iPads and practise our Maths and spelling.

The children are encouraged to be the best individual that they can be - academically, emotionally and socially.  Confidence, independence and responsibility are our big goals for the year.
